2 Timothy 1:5 I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother Lois and to your mother Eunice. I know you now have that same faith.

Believing in something outside ourselves seems to be a natural part of what it means to be human. Each us, at some point, goes looking for that “thing” to believe in; that “thing” to have faith in.

And as we search for that one “thing”, there are two questions that we need to ask ourselves. Firstly, have I found the right “thing”? And secondly, do I truly believe in it?

Some put their faith in finances, and the wealthier you are the easier it is to head down that road. Others, in their own abilities. Others still, in the adulation of the world as they succeed in their chosen endeavours. Then there are those who, having discovered through brutal experience that all those things out there will inevitably fail them, put their faith in Jesus.

Now for them, the first question is answered pretty quickly. In Christ, we’ve absolutely found the right “thing”. But what about that second question – do I truly believe? Here’s Paul writing to his ministry protégé, Timothy:

2 Timothy 1:5 I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother Lois and to your mother Eunice. I know you now have that same faith.

True faith. Hmm. What does that look like? It’s a faith that doesn’t go wandering off on its own merry way on those bright, sunny days; a faith that clings desperately to its Saviour on the bleakest of stormy days. It’s a faith that, come what may, looks to Jesus who will never fail you. Let your faith in Him be true.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
