Joshua 1:8 Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do.

Today we’re going to chat about success: Your success in the kingdom of God. And if you’re a tad sceptical, then good … because whenever someone mixes God’s Word with “success”, you have to be careful.

When you hear that word “success” what picture does it conjure up in your mind? More money, a bigger house, a nicer car, a holiday, a promotion, status, recognition? What does “success” mean to you?

Whilst none of those things are bad, we fall into a dangerous trap indeed if we imagine that they constitute success in God’s Kingdom, if we think that God wants primarily to shower us with trinkets and baubles.

Of course, He does bless some people in that way but that’s not His main aim. That’s not the picture that God has in mind when He thinks about success.

Just as Joshua had to take over as the leader of Israel from Moses to lead God’s people into the promised land battle after battle, God says this to him:

Joshua 1:8 Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do.

The success God’s talking about here is in achieving His plans and purposes, not Joshua’s. As Jesus put it centuries later, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done …”

And what underwrites that success? Receiving God’s Word into your heart, ruminating on it, and in response, obeying it. That’s where you’ll find wisdom. That’s where you’ll find success in doing what God’s called you to do.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
