So, here we are on Friday the 13th … a day considered in western culture to bring bad luck. Wherever you live, negative superstitions have swirled around for centuries – walking under a ladder, a black cat crossing your path, breaking a mirror. They’re all said to bring bad luck.

When you think about it, superstition has its roots in fear. And fear, one of the most negative of all emotions, often emanates from evil – not all fear of course, but certainly the sort we’re talking about here.

Think about it, fear never emanates from love, kindness, goodness, doing what’s right, but it certainly does from evil – violence, arrogance, selfishness and the like. Countless women and children live in terrible fear because of the brutality of the men in their lives.

Pretty much all of us believe that there’s a spiritual dimension to life. And make no mistake, that spiritual dimension too encompasses both good and evil.

Now, some consider the notion of there being a devil, Satan, to be merely a Christian version of superstition. I don’t, because you read the Gospel accounts and Jesus very clearly believed in the existence of the devil, a devil who’s alive and well still today, reeking havoc in the lives of so many.

1 John 3:8 The devil has been sinning since the beginning. Anyone who continues to sin belongs to the devil. The Son of God came for this: to destroy the devil’s work.

Friend, don’t allow the devil to meddle in your life. Don’t let him drag you into evil, don’t let him bring darkness and fear into your life because there is an alternative: Jesus, who came to destroy the works of the devil  … in your life.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
