Mark 4:25 Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; my rock and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues the peoples under me.

When the battles of life threaten to overwhelm you, what do you do? Where do you turn? They’re important questions to think through, because sooner or later we all find ourselves in places where those battles do threaten to overwhelm us.

I remember, back in my days in the military, one of our padres saying to us that there are no atheists in foxholes. With the bullets flying and the shells going off in the heat of battle, somehow a soldier’s instinct is to open his heart to God.

As someone whose life had been threatened so many times, it’s something that King David knew only too well.

Psalm 144:1,2 Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; my rock and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues the peoples under me.

When we’re threatened, when we’re hard pressed, when everything seems to be falling apart – right in that place – we have a choice, you and I.

We can choose to continue to rely on ourselves, even though we ourselves are being overwhelmed by the battle. We can plough on ahead, hoping for the best, hoping that luck will fall our way.

Or we can put our trust in the God who holds our today, our tomorrow, and indeed our eternity in His hand; the God who loves us so much that He sent Jesus to suffer and die so that we could be forgiven; and to rise again so that we could have the new life that He wants for us, so that we could have the eternity that He yearns for, for us.

We have a choice down there in the foxhole with the bullets flying and the bombs going off. What will you choose?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
