Proverbs 23:4,5 Don’t ruin your health trying to get rich. If you are smart, you will give it up. In the blink of an eye, money can disappear, as if it grew wings and flew away like a bird.

It’s utterly astounding to me the seemingly endless variety of things that we don’t need – that we will never need – that are out there for us to spend our money on. So when was the last time you bought something you didn’t need?

The seductive ads on television and in those glossy magazines all promise us a new lease on life. You know how it goes – take this holiday and you’ll feel like a new person, buy this moisturiser and you’ll look ten years younger … and on they go with the outlandish promises that none of us believe, but all of us want to fall for.

Truth: it doesn’t matter how much you spend – the thing that you buy is never going to turn you into a new person. It’s a scam, plain and simple.

And yet, materialism has seemingly become the god of our age. The desire to acquire more and more, to have more and more, to experience more and more is … more and more … taking over people’s lives.

One of the saddest things that I see is people who work so long and so hard to have more … to live in a bigger house, to drive a more expensive car … that it robs them of their family life, their health and in the end, life itself.

Here’s a bit of advice from King Solomon, one of the wisest and wealthiest men ever to walk this earth.

Proverbs 23:4,5 Don’t ruin your health trying to get rich. If you are smart, you will give it up. In the blink of an eye, money can disappear, as if it grew wings and flew away like a bird.

Objects lose their shine. Riches are fleeting. If you’re smart, you’ll give it up – this desire for stuff – and enjoy the life that you’ve been given.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
