1 Corinthians 15:1,2 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. (NRSV)

I strongly suspect that there’s a point in every person’s faith walk, at which we kind of wander off the path. Drift away from our relationship with Jesus. There certainly has been in mine.

You know how it goes. You start off believing in the Gospel of Jesus – the Good News that because He paid the price of your sin on that cross, you’re completely forgiven by God. Hallelujah! It’s a joy, it’s a privilege, but then the realities of life set in. Those day-to-day pressures take over. You become so distracted that at some point you kind of realise that you’ve wandered so far off the track, that you don’t even know anymore whether that Good News is still available to you.

Maybe that’s why God’s brought us together today, over His Word:

1 Corinthians 15:1,2 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. (NRSV)

There are two tracks here. Track one is that the Good News that we once received still lives on in our hearts; that we’re still “standing in it” as Paul puts it here, in which case we are being saved by it day by day – provided that we hold fast to the Word of truth. The Good News of Jesus.

Track two is that we’ve drifted off and as things turn out, our faith back then has turned out to be in vain. Now there’s a scary thought. A very, scary thought.

Maybe God is calling you back today, to remember, to stand in the Good News which has the power to save your soul. Don’t believe in vain. That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
